EVEN function

The Excel EVEN function is a simple yet handy tool that helps you round a number up to the nearest even integer. It’s especially useful when you need to work with numbers that must be even, like setting the number of participants in a game or the number of items to produce in manufacturing.

Syntax

EVEN(number)

Arguments

numberThe numeric value that you want to round up to the nearest even integer.

How to use

To use the Excel EVEN function, follow these steps:

  1. Open an Excel spreadsheet where you want to round a number to the nearest even integer.
  2. Select the cell where you want the result to appear.
  3. Enter the formula in the cell, replacing “number” with the actual value you want to round:

Here, “A1” should be the cell reference containing the number you want to round.

After entering the formula, press Enter, and the cell will display the number rounded up to the nearest even integer.

Examples

Let’s go through a few examples to illustrate how to use the EVEN function:

FormulaResult
=EVEN(5)6
=EVEN(7.8)8
=EVEN(12.3)14
=EVEN(0)0

As shown in the examples, the EVEN function rounds up the given numbers to the nearest even integer.

Additional Information

If you want to round a number to the nearest odd integer, you can use the ODD function in Excel, which works similarly but rounds numbers to the nearest odd integer. Additionally, keep in mind that if you pass a negative number to the EVEN function, it will round the absolute value of that number to the nearest even integer.
