We will show how to add the vertical line to a <strong>Bar Chart.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add a Vertical Line to the Bar Chart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For our example, we will create a table with yearly sales data:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"207\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-descr-1.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, text, application\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-10475\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We will present this data on a <strong>Bar Chart<\/strong> by selecting the data, then going to <strong>Insert tab &gt;&gt; Charts<\/strong> and selecting among <strong>Column or Bar Charts<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"932\" height=\"566\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-1.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, application\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-10476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-1.png 932w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-1-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-1-768x466.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 932px) 100vw, 932px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We have purposefully chosen a bar chart as the <a href=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/examples\/add-horizontal-and-vertical-lines-in-excel-cells\/\">vertical line<\/a> would not be as visible in the <strong>Column Chart<\/strong> type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the vertical line, we will calculate the <strong>average sales<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, once we choose a <strong>Bar Chart (2-D Bar Chart in our case)<\/strong>, we will create a separate table where we set additional <strong>x and y values<\/strong>. X values will be the <strong>average of our sales figures<\/strong>, and y values will be <strong>set to 0 and 1<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"167\" height=\"86\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-chart-description-automatica.png\" alt=\"A picture containing chart\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-10477\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we create this mini table, we will go to our chart, right-click on it and choose the <strong>Select Data option<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"498\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-2.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, application\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-10478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-2.png 498w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-2-300x243.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the pop-up dialog that appears <strong>(Select Data Source)<\/strong>, we will click the <strong>Add button<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"579\" height=\"328\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/word-image-10472-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/word-image-10472-5.png 579w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/word-image-10472-5-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once on the <strong>Edit Series dialog box<\/strong>, we will do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Select series name in <strong>Series name<\/strong> part<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose the <strong>X values<\/strong> in Series values (<strong>range E2:E3<\/strong> in our case):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"307\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-3.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, application\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-10480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-3.png 307w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-3-300x156.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We will click <strong>OK two times<\/strong> and will have two bars added to our chart. They will be differently colored. In the new window, we will go to the <strong>last option- Combo<\/strong>, and choose <strong>Scatter with Straight Lines and Markers<\/strong> (one of the <strong>XY Scatter charts<\/strong>) for the <strong>Average series<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"636\" height=\"602\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-word-descr-1.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, application, Word\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-10482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-word-descr-1.png 636w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-application-word-descr-1-300x284.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we <strong>click OK<\/strong>, our <strong>Average series<\/strong> will be presented as a data point on the <strong>y-axis<\/strong>.
