Let\u2019s say that we don\u2019t want to see sales for each month, only a summary for each quarter of a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grouping rows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We will group cells for each quarter in order to improve our data visually and make it more concise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to do this, click and drag <a href=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/examples\/add-row-number-to-an-excel-table\/\">row numbers<\/a>, first, for rows&nbsp;<strong>2<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>4<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/select-rows.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1065\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose&nbsp;<strong>DATA &gt;&gt; Outline<\/strong>&nbsp;and press the&nbsp;<strong>Group<\/strong>&nbsp;button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do the same for the remaining rows (<strong>6-8<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>10-12<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>14-16<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will give us the following result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"293\" height=\"379\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/grouped-rows.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/grouped-rows.png 293w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/grouped-rows-232x300.png 232w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TIP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of clicking the group button in the <a href=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/training\/ribbon\/\">ribbon<\/a> each time you want to create a new group, you can use the&nbsp;<strong><span class=\"shortcut\">Shift + Alt + Right Arrow<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;keyboard shortcut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collapsing rows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to collapse rows, you can do it both ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Individually (by clicking the&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;+&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;button).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. All at once (by clicking the&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;2&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;button).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ungrouping rows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To ungroup rows, first select rows to ungroup, then choose&nbsp;<strong>DATA &gt;&gt; Outline &gt;&gt; Ungroup<\/strong>&nbsp;or use The&nbsp;<strong><span class=\"shortcut\">Shift + Alt + Left Arrow<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;keyboard shortcut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collapsing nested rows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can group cells inside other cells. Look at this example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"360\" height=\"260\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/nested-rows-example.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/nested-rows-example.png 360w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/nested-rows-example-300x217.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>First, select and group rows from&nbsp;<strong>2<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>11.<\/strong>&nbsp;When you have the first group create two other groups (<strong>2-5<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>7-10<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"422\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/nested-rows.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1070\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/nested-rows.png 422w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/nested-rows-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 422px) 100vw, 422px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After you created groups, you have three buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;1&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 will collapse all groups<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;2&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 will collapse subgroups<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;3&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 will expand all groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collapse columns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can groups and collapse columns the same way as you did with rows.
