{"id":2896,"date":"2018-08-11T08:47:08","date_gmt":"2018-08-11T08:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/?p=2896"},"modified":"2024-03-29T14:06:07","modified_gmt":"2024-03-29T14:06:07","slug":"apply-formula-to-an-entire-column","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/formulas\/apply-formula-to-an-entire-column\/","title":{"rendered":"Apply Formula to an Entire Column in Excel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There are a few methods to apply the formula for the rest of the cells in a column that the formula should be placed, or even to the last cell in the column.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apply formula to the part of the column<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fill cells by dragging<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a formula entered inside a cell and you want to apply it to the rest of the cells, the simplest method to do it is by clicking the little square in the bottom right corner and filling rest of the cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/drag.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/drag.png 410w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/drag-300x151.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This method is good because you have control over the number of cells you want to fill. You can go to the last row or just fill a number of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AutoFill the rest of the cells<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The second method is faster, but you don\u2019t have as much control as with the former method. This method is called <a href=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/en\/training\/autofill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AutoFill<\/a>. In order to use it, hover the little square in the bottom right corner and double-click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"346\" height=\"179\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/autofill.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2898\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/autofill.png 346w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/autofill-300x155.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fill down the rest of the cells<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The next way to fill the rest of the cells is by using fill down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Select the cells <strong>D1:D6<\/strong> or click cell <strong>D1<\/strong> and press <strong>Ctrl + Shift + Down<\/strong>. The second method is especially useful if you have more cells and selecting them by dragging would be too time-consuming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"346\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/fill-down.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/fill-down.png 346w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/fill-down-300x139.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, when you have the cells selected, you can go to <strong>HOME &gt;&gt; Editing &gt;&gt; Fill &gt;&gt; Down<\/strong> to fill the rest of the cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can use the <strong>Ctrl + D<\/strong> keyboard shortcut. In our example, you can use <strong>ctrl + space<\/strong> because our formula is in the top row.
