One of them is to convert the name of the months into numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you might think that this issue could be formatting-related, it is actually a matter of using the correct formula. We will show that in the example below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change Months from Text to Numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For our example, we will use the table with months that are not ordered chronologically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"104\" height=\"307\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/text-table-description-automatically-generated.png\" alt=\"Text, table\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-8047\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/text-table-description-automatically-generated.png 104w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/text-table-description-automatically-generated-102x300.png 102w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 104px) 100vw, 104px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, we will put the following formula into <strong>cell B2<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>=MONTH(DATEVALUE(A2&amp;\"1\"))<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To explain how this works, we have to explain formulas separately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DATEVALUE<\/strong> is a function that returns a serial number from a date that is in text format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have to use the <strong>\u201e&amp;\u201c<\/strong> symbol and any number to make Excel convert the text into a number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MONTH<\/strong> function returns the value of the month from 1 to 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, with our formula, we make Excel recognize the number of our month and then return this number to our cell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we drag the formula to the end of our range, our table will look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"309\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/a-picture-containing-chart-description-automatica.png\" alt=\"A picture containing chart\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-8048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/a-picture-containing-chart-description-automatica.png 200w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/a-picture-containing-chart-description-automatica-194x300.png 194w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You will notice that this formula returned the proper values for every month in our table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we had the whole date, to find out the serial number of the date, we can use the <strong>MONTH<\/strong> formula as a standalone one, like in the example below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>=MONTH(D2)<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"149\" height=\"149\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/timeline-description-automatically-generated.png\" alt=\"Timeline\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-8049\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Excel has many helpful tips and tricks that people are usually not aware of.
