Especially if it is something that usually works without any issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those things is <strong>hyperlinks in Excel<\/strong>. We will show how to fix the issues with hyperlinks in Excel in the text below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix for: Name Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hyperlinks in Excel<\/strong> can link to a file, website, or to a certain cell in another worksheet in existing or in another workbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To see all the options, we can simply right-click on any cell in our Excel and then click on the <strong>Link option<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"331\" height=\"555\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/table-description-automatically-generated-with-me-2.png\" alt=\"Table\n\nDescription automatically generated with medium confidence\" class=\"wp-image-8998\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/table-description-automatically-generated-with-me-2.png 331w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/table-description-automatically-generated-with-me-2-179x300.png 179w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we click on this icon, this is the window that we see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"644\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-6.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, text, application, email\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-8999\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-6.png 644w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-6-300x155.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We see that we have options to insert hyperlinks to an existing file or web page, place them in the document, e-mail address, or we can create a new document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For our exercise, we will link an existing file that is located in the current folder (in a folder where our Excel file is also located) called <strong>Hyperlink.docx<\/strong>. We will then <strong>click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we have a hyperlink linked to the text in <strong>cell A2<\/strong> <strong>(\u201eHere\u201c)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"130\" height=\"88\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-application-table-desc-2.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, application, table\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-9000\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we hover over this text, we will see the location of our hyperlink. When we click on it, our word file will be opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first problem that we could encounter is that someone changes the name of our word file. Let us say that we changed its name from <strong>Hyperlink.docx<\/strong> to <strong>Hyperlink1.docx<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"563\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-7.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, text, application, email\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-9001\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-7.png 563w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-7-300x106.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we get back to our workbook and click on the hyperlink, we will get the following <strong>error message<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"381\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-application-table-desc-3.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, application, table\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-9002\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-application-table-desc-3.png 381w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-application-table-desc-3-300x148.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What we need to do is edit our hyperlink. To do this, we will again right-click on the cell where the hyperlink is located and click <strong>Edit hyperlink<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"277\" height=\"501\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-application-table-desc-4.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, application, table\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-9003\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-application-table-desc-4.png 277w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-application-table-desc-4-166x300.png 166w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We will choose the right file and <strong>click OK<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-8.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, text, application, email\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-9004\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-8.png 646w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-8-300x158.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 646px) 100vw, 646px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix for: Hash Sign<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The second problem you can face is that you will be unable to open the file if it has the <strong>hash or \u201c#\u201d sign<\/strong> in the name. If we change the name of our file to be <strong>Hyperlink1#.docx<\/strong>, we will still be able to open up the file. We will also edit the hyperlink in the Excel file, but will still have the same error message, i.e. <strong>\u201cCannot open the specified file\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the hyperlink that we cannot open:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"645\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-9.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, text, application, email\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-9005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-9.png 645w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-9-300x155.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to rename our file name again to be <strong>Hyperlink1.docx<\/strong>, not to have a <strong>hash sign<\/strong>. Once we do, we will not have the error message again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix for: Shutdown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another issue that you can face is when our system has a sudden shutdown, or we are forced to close Excel files due to some error. We will be unable to open our links in this situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, Excel has an option to update the hyperlinks every time the workbook is saved. For this to run smoothly, you could probably first enable the auto-saving option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure our links are updated on saving, we need to go to the <strong>File tab &gt;&gt; Options &gt;&gt; Advanced<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once there, we will scroll to the <strong>General tab<\/strong> and click on the <strong>Web Options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"827\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-10.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, text, application, email\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-9006\" srcset=\"https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-10.png 827w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-10-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/officetuts.net\/excel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-10-768x436.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 827px) 100vw, 827px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we click on it, a new window appears.
