Average Formula Shortcut in Excel

When you are dealing with anything that has to do with computers, especially with the Office package, you can always use shortcuts to help you achieve desired results faster.

In the example below, we will show the shortcuts for the AVERAGE formula in Excel.

For our example, we will use the list of random numbers, which we got by using the RANDBETWEEN formula, in which we put numbers between 1,000 and 3,000:

To calculate the AVERAGE of this range by using shortcuts, we can do the following things:

  1. We can get to the end of our range, type in the equal sign followed by the formula (=AVERAGE), and then choose the range that needs to be calculated. For this to work, we simply need to begin typing in the first few letters of our formula, and the AVERAGE will be suggested:
  1. Probably the best and the easiest way to get to the AVERAGE formula is to click on the Auto Sum button (Greek letter Sigma), either on the Home page tab:

Or in the Formulas tab:

When we click on a little arrow, a dropdown menu will appear, from which we will choose Average. The good thing is that, if we position ourselves beneath our range, that range will automatically be included in the formula:

If you do not have a mouse near you, you can also use keyboard shortcuts. For this purpose, we will combine ALT + MUA. To explain this, ALT + M opens the Formula tab:

The next step that you want to take is to click U, as that is where the Auto Sum is located, and then click A, as that is the shortcut to AVERAGE:

By using this combination, you will reach the formula in the quickest way possible.
